Question: I am getting a laser alignment Error SC322. I took out the laser unit and cleaned the optics and the polygon disc. I also cleaned all connections to the board with QD electronic parts cleaner, including the ribbon cable. I still have the code. The copier had toner sprayed all over inside. I vacuumed all of that out. I am thinking it came from the toner unit. Is there anything else I can do to clear this error, short of changing that whole LD unit?

Answer: Nope, it’s an issue with the laser alignment motor on the front of the unit. It cannot be serviced. You have to replace the LD unit.

Answer: Did you clear and perform the laser pitch adjustments in SP mode?

Answer: I guess I should have given you the codes.    2109 8 (reset)    2109 1 (400 dpi)    2109 2 (600 dpi)
Now your SC322 code is NOT the result of not doing the pitch adjustment, but anytime you remove or replace the laser you need to do the pitch adjustments or you’ll get an error. My thinking is it would be better to do these codes first before you replace the old laser just in case. It just might make it work. Also, on the predecessor to your model there was a tech bulletin that had a fix for SC322 where you would loosen the front mounting screw and raise the right side of the laser up about 1mm then tighten the screw back down. Then you’d do the beam pitch adjustment and it fixed the problem. However, that shouldn’t be an issue on your model. Chances are, it’s toast since it got toner all in it. But I’d try these things before springing for a new laser. By the way, I’m a Toshiba tech so I’m not real familiar with Ricohs, but maybe this will help.

Answer: Before replacing the LD unit, try this remedy. We have done this many times and luckily it works. Remove and clean the LD unit by blowing air inside the hole underneath the label (white label, up & down), to clean the lens inside, then re-assemble. Adjust LD Power SP-2013 – (1,2,3), increase the value (ex: +25 or more), then adjust LD Beam Pitch Adjustment, SP-2109-3 & 4. If that doesn’t solve it, check or replace the interlock switches on the right side, above the fusing unit. Last option, replace the LD unit. Good luck.

Answer: Pry up on the right side of the laser box while tightening it; sometimes it is enough to correct the warp in the box.

Answer: Replace the interlock switches above the fuser that detect the opening of the right hand door. They become contaminated with toner dust from the developer below. These switches cut the voltage to the laser when the door is opened. The switches for the front door do the same thing but are not as susceptible to contamination.

Subject: Sharp AR-168D

Question: What is the service code to remove the maintenance man on the panel?

Answer: I believe it’s in sim 20 sub sim 01.

Question: What is the simulation code to get into the various maintenance codes? I don’t have a book on this machine.  Also, the customer put in new toner cartridge and the toner light is still on, so what is the sim code and the number to clear the toner light?

Answer: Probably a bad card, I don’t know of a code to clear the toner–if it looks like a snow flake it’s a developer light, they make that mistake on occasion.

Question: It’s the toner symbol (triangle). So what you are saying is, there is no way to clear it so just let it go and run out until the next cartridge?

Subject: Ricoh Aficio MP 161 drum

Question: The drum for this machine is not in good shape so I am replacing it with a new one. Does the drum counter need to be reset after installation? If it does then what is the procedure? Thank you for the information.

Answer: Buy the PCU assembly and replace the whole unit. Just slide it in and turn the machine on. Everything is automatic.

Question: Thank you for the information.

Answer: If it’s less than 60K, you can replace the drum and blade only, but you’ll need to clean the unit properly, especially the charge roller–no initialization needed.

Answer: Just replace it as stated, so there aren’t any hassles down the road. It’s not that much anyways.

Subject: Toshiba 1550

Question: The machine threw a C-26 code. I have the service manual but not the field guide that says what the codes are. Long-gone tech lost that. I thought all 1550/1560 problem children were gone, but this one runs one decent copy, then throws the wrench symbol.

Answer: That should be a bad exposure lamp, or contacts. Good Luck.

Question: The C-26 is an exposure lamp detect problem, so I should check the lamp, thermo fuse, ribbon cable and contacts.  Thanks guys, I’ll check that lamp and circuit. It’s been a while on some of the obscure analogs.
