Sharp First Manufacturer To Achieve New International Security Standard

Montvale, NJ (Nov. 14, 2017) — Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America is the first document systems manufacturer to announce certification against the latest Common Criteria Security Protection Profile. The Protection Profile for Hardcopy Devices v1.0 (HCD-PP v1.0) provides the most up to date security validation for businesses, government and military offices.

The Common Criteria is a set of guidelines used to evaluate information technology equipment. The specifications are set and tested by independent laboratories. Sharp is certified by Japan’s IT security evaluation and certification system (JISEC).

The Hardcopy Device Protection Profile v1.0 (HCD-PP) is a new requirement for digital multifunction printers (MFPs) based on the security requirements specified by the U.S. and Japanese governments. It was developed through the industry collaboration with National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) and International-Technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA). It aims to protect the information processed by an MFP from security threats and includes specifications for encryption and firewalls.

“Sharp has always aimed to achieve a secure and productive office environment through the development of our digital MFPs,” said Vince Jannelli, Associate Vice President, Software Product Management, Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America. “Keeping up with evolving standards, such as Common Criteria, is important to ensure that our customers can confidently handle the most sensitive data on our devices.”

The following Sharp devices have received the certification: MX-2630N, MX-3050N/3550N/4050N/5050N/6050N, MX-3070N/3570N/4070N/5070N/6070N. Existing and new customers can add this option via a firmware update.
