Earlier this week, Epson America officially launched a pair of devices for its flatbed scanner lineup, the DS-1730 and DS-1760WN flatbed color duplex models. The units boast reliability and enhanced productivity, and their versatility provides ideal placements for verticals including health care, finance, government and enterprise, among others.
In advance of the release, Manuel Moreno—longtime product manager for Epson—provided ENX Magazine with a preview of the scanners, which fill the gap of two retired unit lines, the DS-1630 and DS-6500/DS-7500. According to Moreno, their versatility and ability to integrate and take on workflow needs make them an attractive proposition, while the DS-1760WN step-up provides a jolt of productivity.
“One of the more compelling features is its ability to tackle workflows,” Moreno said. “We have our TWAIN and ISIS drivers; the Document Capture Pro solution. We’ve added nice features to make the scanning easier—you can put several documents on the scanner and get them any way you choose. The combination of those things will allow the end-users to effectively address workflow needs.
“The ScanWay feature offered in the DS-1760WN step-up is a pretty powerful solution,” Moreno added. “There’s nothing like it in other flatbeds—they don’t have the scan-to-cloud services like we offer. It’s certainly provided Epson with an advantage.”
Other features include:
Strong capacity. Both offer a 60-page Auto Document Feeder (ADF) and advanced media handling to scan multiple documents simultaneously and accommodate large stacks plus long documents – up to 120″ on the DS-1730 and up to 220” on the DS-1760WN. The multiple document features enables output on separate pages for each item, or the scans can be sent to separate digital files.
Challenging documents. From plastic cards (ID, insurance, credit/debit) to passports, books and fragile materials, the DS-1730 and DS-1760WN can take on hard-to-scan items. Its ease of use provides confidence when dealing with delicate and sensitive original docs.
Improved speeds. The units offer speeds of up to 30 ppm/60 ipm2 and single-pass duplex scanning, with a peak daily duty cycle of up to 3,000 pages3. This is an improvement over the DS-1630, which was 25 ppm with a multi-pass duplex scan. These models allow users to easily scan to email or online storage accounts4 with the Epson Document Capture Pro5 software, which comes standard.
Document edge correction. Regardless of whether the document has punch holes, folds or tears, the scanners can make alterations on the edge of the document. The result is a cleaner scan and a decreased file size, as there is no image data wasted in components that do not add anything to the document.

From a workflow perspective, these scanners can easily integrate while replacing older/retired units. TWAIN and ISIS drivers provide seamless integration with virtually any document management system. This comes standard with all Epson commercial scanners.
Some of the step-up features of the DS-1760WN include an LCD 2.4” color touch screen for intuitive operation, which boasts simple navigation and is customizable for creating user presets and job profiles. Users can also adjust the order of the icons to make it more efficient for their needs.
The DS-1760WN also offers a more flexible connectivity. Enhancing workgroup productivity with built-in wireless and wired Ethernet connectivity and ScanWay PC-free scanning, the DS-1760WN enables users to scan to a USB flash drive,6 or network destinations including email7, folders7 or online storage accounts8 without the need to install any software.
With its market-leading position in the scanner realm1, Epson is constantly garnering input that can lead to innovations that can further solidify its standing. “We take any feedback we receive seriously, as we’re always eager to hear about the users’ experience with our scanners,” Moreno said. “We visit our partners’ end-users and observe how they interact with them. Our engineers in Japan are always thinking about ways to advance what the scanner can do. We’re always looking for ways to differentiate, create more value and make scanning easier for everyone.”
The DS-1730 (MSRP $449) and DS-1760WN (MSRP $699) are now available through authorized CapturePro resellers. Click here for more information.
