Epson Rolls Out New DS-790WN Wireless Scanner for Paper-Intensive Environments

The migration to work-from-home environments may have unseated the traditional office setting, but it has also underscored the need for networking technologies to expedite collaborative productivity. As such, Epson America has provided the displaced office another tool in the wireless document scanning realm that not only checks off the performance boxes, but adds a competitively-priced option in a hotly-contested field.

Earlier this week, Epson introduced the DS-790WN wireless network color document scanner featuring versatile connectivity. At 40 pages per minute (ppm), the 790 is the successor model to the DS-780N and slots in alongside the 575W II (35 ppm) and 730N (40 ppm) in the Epson network document scanner lineup.

Designed for reliability and ease of use in a wide range of industries such as government, service bureau, higher education, finance, and health care, the DS-790WN delivers high-quality scans at fast speeds so businesses can manage documents with confidence.

“The demand for efficient document management and seamless integration into workflows continues to grow, and the need for network scanners has never been more apparent,” said Tim Anderson, group product manager, Epson America. “The newest addition to Epson’s award-winning document scanner portfolio, the DS-790WN comes equipped with robust features including network connectivity and an intuitive touchscreen panel so businesses can easily scan and share high volumes of documents PC-free.”

The DS-790WN delivers high-quality scans up to 45ppm/90ipm1 with a peak daily duty cycle up to 7,000 sheets,2 one-pass duplex scanning, and a high-volume 100-page ADF that accommodates business and ID cards and sheets up to 8.5×240.” Built to support collaborative workgroups, the DS-790WN includes a 4.3” color LCD touchscreen and built-in LAN and wireless connectivity to easily access multiple scan jobs or scan to a USB drive, e-mail, network3 or cloud storage services4,5 such as Dropbox, Evernote, and Google Drive4,5 – without the need for a computer. Individual user authentication6 via the touchscreen or an optional card reader7 provides to access personal usage records and custom scan settings to ensure hassle-free scanning.

Greg Newcomb, associate product manager for Epson, pointed out to ENX Magazine that, like the 780, the authentication functionality of the scanner for security and secure routing uses a piece of Epson’s software called Document Capture Pro Server Authentication Edition. This software allows the IT manager to designate, on the server, which team members can have access to which scan jobs.

“I can manage and also track who scans what, so that if something is scanned that shouldn’t be scanned, or I need to locate documents based on a particular user, it can be cataloged and retrieved through that user’s ID,” Newcomb said, adding that the card reader option is well received in environments that are trying to reduce physical interaction with devices.

With seamless compatibility for most existing document management systems, the DS-790WN features integrated TWAIN and ISIS drivers and includes OCR software to easily create searchable PDFs and customizable Office documents.3 Users can also scan with mobile devices using the Epson Smart Panel app8 on iOS or Android.

Newcomb also points out that, from a price and feature set standpoint, the DS-790WN matches up against some of the key competitors in the space. When stacked up against Fujitsu, for example, the DS-790WN is a mid-range option between the ScanSnap iX 1600 and fi-7300NX desktop network scanners.

“On the high end with their 7300, we think we offer a pretty robust set of features at a much more competitive price point,” he said. “Compared to the iX 1600, we’re a little more expensive, but we offer a little more versatility and functionality for that price.”
