Off the Record

Here’s a new column where I present interesting comments that were made to me off the record. I think it’s a great way to share what’s going on in people’s minds when they can speak freely and not have to worry about me naming names. The following is from an independent office technology dealer.

“I remember eight, nine years ago when color was the big push for everything. Now all the manufacturers have it. The word on the street back then was that if you didn’t have a specialist your dealership will become defunct; you won’t be able to compete in the market without a color specialist—someone you would have to hire for about $80,000 to $100,000 to support your salespeople.

It never happened because most dealers couldn’t afford to pay somebody $80,000 to $100,000 to sit there waiting for his salespeople to run into color applications that needed a specialist. Basically what we told the manufacturer is you find the color specialist and help us when we run into those kinds of opportunities.”
