Epson Introduces 100 PPM Monochrome Inkjet Line to Office Market

Epson America Inc., a leading provider of high- performing printing solutions, today announced the expansion of its corporate inkjet line head printer portfolio with the WorkForce Enterprise WF-M20590 A3 multifunction network printer, delivering monochrome prints at 100 ISO ppm – the fastest print speed in its class1. Alongside the 100 ISO ppm WorkForce Enterprise WF-C20590 and the 75 ISO ppm WorkForce Enterprise WF-C17590, the WF-M20590 was designed to offer dealers and customers a monochrome option.

Epson’s WF-M20590 A3 printer

Powered by PrecisionCore Line Head Technology, this network MFP offers high-speed, brilliant-quality output to meet the productivity and versatility needs of SMB and corporate workgroups with high print volume demands.

“Epson is making great investments in R&D to enhance its Business Inkjet offerings,” said Joseph Contreras, commercial marketing executive. “Adding a monochrome MFP with Epson’s PrecisionCore Line Head Technology is a further step toward our commitment to not only expanding our printer portfolio, but also providing professional-quality solutions for our channel partners and customers.”

Product Breakdown

The WF-M20590 delivers high-volume, monochrome printing and uses up to 50 percent less power than monochrome lasers1, keeping operating costs down. For a faster workflow and larger print jobs, the WF-M20590 features a 5,350-page maximum paper capacity2 and an optional finisher for stacking and stapling. It also supports both Epson and third-party print management solutions for tracking usage costs. Additionally, the network MFP offers Epson Connect, with a full suite of mobile printing capabilities3 and scan to the cloud4 via a user-friendly 9-inch touchscreen.

Scott Marsic, Epson

Scott Marsic, senior product manager for Business Imaging at Epson, sat down with ENX Magazine to provide an overview of the WF-M20590. He noted that Epson came to market with an enterprise device focused on the color user and color applications, but pointed out a lot of printed pages in the business environment—including health care, education, general administrative, government and insurance—have a primary focus on monochrome output.

The WF-M20590 is similar to the WF-C20590 in that it offers the 100 ppm output, and has virtually the same functionality that the color device has, with only subtle differences. The WF-M20590 uses a monochrome ink cassette that resembles the black cartridge on the color units, but the yield has been boosted from 50,000 to 60,000 pages per cartridge, and Epson provides two cartridges with the printer.

Also, the WF-M20590 has the same look and feel as its color counterpart. The unit can perform at 100 ppm simplex or duplex, without sacrificing image quality, and features a tight paper path. Pages print cool to the touch, and paper jams are easy to clear. It can handle paper sizes up to 11×17”, and users can run 13×19” through the bypass. It also has most of the optional capabilities that are available on the color device (no faxing option).

As an aside, the WF-M20590 can plug into a 110-volt outlet, making it unnecessary to route higher voltage to the machine. When powered on, the machine doesn’t require time to warm up, providing plug-and-go convenience that augments its claim as the fastest speed in its class.

Secret Sauce

Nozzle verification technology is another selling point with the WF-M20590. With the PrecisionCore Line Head Technology, Epson uses piezoelectric nozzles that have an in-core filament on top of the nozzle.

“We’re applying a voltage to allow ink placement onto the media,” Marsic explains. “We can adjust ink placement and do a lot of cool things around how ink is placed with no heat. Because we apply a voltage to all of those nozzles, we get feedback on whether they’re firing or not. If something isn’t firing, the system is able to detect the nozzle is not firing, and it automatically adjusts the ink placement to the surrounding nozzles. This prevents you from having degradation in print quality as you’re running through a job.

“The print head is a line head—that’s how we’re able to get these remarkable speeds. Unlike our desktop products, which have a head that oscillates back and forth, this is a static head, so pages move through and were able to give that fast print speed with very high resolution.”

Epson has positioned the WF-M20590 to work with a number of its own and third-party solutions for embedded functionality, including some of the most popular print and document management offerings. The unit can work with Print Fleet, FM Audit, Y Soft, Nuance, PaperCut, Laserfiche, Square 9 and countless other solutions.

“The customers and dealers are very intrigued by the value proposition that Epson PrecisionCore technology brings to the market,” Marsic added. “This is for that space that doesn’t need the color functionality, but can benefit from the low total cost of ownership and the low intervention.”

The Epson WorkForce Enterprise WF-M20590 will be available June 4 through authorized BusinessFirst Platinum dealers.
