That\npresents a quandary: Do you push forward and \u201cmake do\u201d with what you have, or\ndo you persist in obtaining the resources needed to get the job done right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enxmag.com\/twii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Gruener.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34071\"\/><figcaption>Ted Gruener\nDirector of Business Development\nSupplies Network<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in his career, Ted Gruener was presented with this\ndilemma during a sales training. The speaker offered this nugget of wisdom: If\nyou have a gallon of paint and four walls, it is much better to paint one wall\nreally well than to do a subpar job on all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat visual has helped me focus on what will move the\nneedle versus what is just noise,\u201d said Gruener, a 2019 <em>ENX Magazine<\/em> Difference Maker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gruener, the director of business development for Supplies\nNetwork, has long since banished the term \u201csubpar\u201d from his vocabulary. His\ncareer spans nearly 30 years, with high-impact positions at notable office\nproduct giants such as U.S. Office Products, Corporate Express and\nBoise\/OfficeMax. Having held sales leadership positions at U.S. Office Products\nand Boise\/OfficeMax, Gruener had the opportunity to do business with Greg\nWelchans and David Concors of Supplies Network, and was thrilled with the\nopportunity to join them in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSupplies Network cannot be successful without great\npartners,\u201d Gruener observed. \u201cI love working in an organization that executes\nand innovates to help facilitate growth for our dealers. We have a culture that\nis never satisfied in that quest and are continuously searching for solutions\nand categories to fuel that growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Family Business<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon graduating from Missouri State University, he joined\nthe family\u2019s Gruener Office Supplies in St. Louis, representing the third\ngeneration. He had a hand in every facet of the business and enjoyed working\nalongside his father, Ed. Consolidation was greatly impacting the office\nproducts industry, and the family made the decision to sell. But Gruener was\njust getting started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having the opportunity to mold a team around their strengths\nand providing them the encouragement to succeed drives Gruener. Gruener follow his father\u2019s \u201cwork hard, play hard\u201d edict,\nand the understanding that success comes easier when you love your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an effort to fuel that aforementioned growth, Gruener has\nadded business development managers (BDMs) as a resource to expand Supplies\nNetwork\u2019s thermal, A3 and MPS offerings. Already bolstered by a talented and\ntenured team of BDMs, the latest additions complement them with subject matter\nexpertise in the field. Gruener notes the company\u2019s BDM team also achieved\ndouble-digit growth for the third consecutive year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI take very little credit individually, but take great\npride in each one of them achieving their personal and professional results,\u201d\nhe added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thermal Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Gruener has invested much time in expanding\nSupplies Network\u2019s thermal offering. The company has increased its inventory\nposition for transactional business and is making great strides toward a\nthermal auto replenishment model. He sees it as a growth engine and natural\nextension for Supplies Network\u2019s MPS dealers, while also providing\ntransactional opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving forward, Gruener feels it is imperative that Supplies\nNetwork continues to evolve to remain a leader in the print and foster customer\nsuccess. \u201cOur CEO and leadership team select a set of OGSMs (objectives, goals,\nstrategy and measures) each year and we are relentless in our pursuit to\naccomplish them,\u201d he said. \u201cAs for me, I could run out of paper listing all the\nareas I would like to improve both personally and professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gruener and his wife, Barb, have been married for 22 years\nand are the parents of two teenage sons, William and Tom. The boys play travel\nhockey year-round and also compete together on their varsity high school team.\nBarb and Ted are running enthusiasts and often wrap family vacations around\nmajor races in places like Leadville, Colorado. \n\nTed will be attempting the Leadville Trail 100\nmountain bike race in August, and a week later, he will join the Bike for Hope\ncycling team in the Blue Ridge Mountains in a four-day event. The 500-mile Bike\nfor Hope trek is in its fourth year and includes riders from Supplies Network,\nHP and HSM.
