The new system will reduce direct labor time in the collation, punching and binding process by up to 40%, enabling punch and bind service providers the ability to provide a wider range of binding services and with greater cost efficiency. Rhin-O-Tuff will debut its new Auto Punch System at DRUPA 2016 in Dusseldorf, Germany from May 31 to June 10, 2016, making them the first punch and bind manufacturer to integrate BDT’s patented Tornado technology with its punch technology.

John Lugviel, Rhin-O-Tuff’s VP of Business Development says, “Our recent Interquest market study validated that production printers spend 63% of their time finishing versus printing, with collation and punching representing the majority. As a leader in punch technology, Rhin-O-Tuff’s vision was to address this challenge heightened by the trend of on-demand, shorter runs. It was clear to us that the punch and bind industry has made little progress to keep up with this dynamic shift. Simply designing an auto punch with a faster speed (sheets/hour) is not enough to reduce the time or complexity of manual collation and separation of books stacks. Combining Rhin-O-Tuff’s punch technology with a partner’s paper handling technology was the key to addressing this inefficiency. Now BDT advanced paper handling technology paired with Rhin-O-Tuff punch technology, front/back covers, index tabs, inserts and document pages are all fed, collated, punched and offset stacked ready for binding using the new Auto Punch system, saving printers up to 40% in production efficiency. It’s the first collating punch….truly a major improvement for punch and bind finishing in many years.”

The revolutionary patented BDT Tornado technology provides advanced media separation, lift and transport and greatly expands the media range that can be run on the system. Most importantly for book binding applications, the BDT Tornado technology reliably handles problematic media such as light porous or heavy coated stock and specialty media like plastics, textures and thick substrates. This will enable the collation and punching of the widest variety of books of any automated punch system. Media handling settings can be pre-programmed allowing easy operation of the automated punch with only minimal training.

“We are very pleased to be working with a market leader such as Rhin-O-Tuff to bring the BDT Tornado technology into the punch and bind market”, said Ralf Hipp, CEO of BDT Print Media GmbH. “The advanced media handling capabilities of the BDT Tornado technology have proven very effective within our feeding solutions for digital printer manufacturers such as Kodak and Hewlett Packard. When combined with the robust punch technology from Rhin-O-Tuff, we are confident the new Auto Punch System will allow book binders to broaden their applications, improve efficiency and continue to grow their businesses.”

Demonstration of the combined technologies will be unveiled at DRUPA 2016 in Düsseldorf/Germany (May 31 – June 10) at Rhin-O-Tuff® booth, Hall 06 #C79.
