This writer is excited about the Major League Baseball season being roughly a month away from commencing. Sure, there\u2019s snow everywhere we look, but there\u2019s a big ball of sunshine waiting underneath that big mess. It\u2019s a numbers game; after all, Punxsutawney Phil told us three weeks ago that we weren\u2019t going to have an early spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking about baseball got me to thinking about the new-age statistic that many of us traditionalists cannot stand. It\u2019s wins above replacement (a.k.a. WAR) and it was designed to measure the worth of a player compared to an average-level replacement player. There\u2019s a very convoluted formula involved, but the main takeaway is that it expresses someone\u2019s overall value via a single number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
