Dec. 10, 2014 –<\/em> Is a photosensitive drum including an OEM \u201cdongle\u201d gear and a third party\u2019s sleeve\u00a0classified as a permissible \u201crepair\u201d? This question is critical to each side of the current on-going 337-TA-\u00a0918 investigation. However, nobody has given a convincing answer to this question.<\/p>\n

More respondents are settling with Canon under a term that any cartridge including a photosensitive\u00a0drum that was not made by or on behalf of Canon or its affiliate is not permitted unless there is a final\u00a0adjudication of permissible repair or any analogous defence. As such, if no respondents challenge this\u00a0point and subsequently win their case, then Canon\u2019s term would severely impact the remanufacturing\u00a0industry, as reuse of an OEM \u201cdongle\u201d gear with a non-OEM drum sleeve would be prohibited, and\u00a0reuse of an OEM \u2018dongle\u201d gear with an OEM drum sleeve is not practical.<\/p>\n

The remanufacturers are becoming more and more concerned that the door to remanufactured OEM\u00a0\u201cdongle\u201d gear cartridges would be closed and the corresponding manufactured products would soon be\u00a0cleared from the market.<\/p>\n

As a market leader Print-Rite has always respected other manufacturers\u2019 patents, but in an effort to\u00a0address this industry concern our R&D department has dedicated a large part of its resource in an effort\u00a0to find a workable solution to this problem. After many months of research & development, Print-Rite is\u00a0pleased to announce a breakthrough with our PR-2 drum gear, an innovation to replace the OEM\u00a0\u201cdongle\u201d gear. PR-2 drum gear has received non-infringement opinions from two prominent US patent\u00a0firms and further, PR-2 gear has obtained worldwide patent protection. Print-Rite has strong confidence\u00a0that PR-2 gear will alleviate the industry concerns of \u201cdongle\u201d patents and leave a door open for the\u00a0remanufacturers to invigorate the manufacturing business regardless of the aftermath of the ITC\u00a0investigation.<\/p>\n

PR-2 gear is suitable for a wide range of monochrome cartridges and drums, including but not limited to\u00a0HP CE505, Canon CF280, and HP CE255 series.<\/p>\n
