Between the Lines: And So It Begins

business travel2This week I was in Las Vegas for the EFI Connect conference. It was a terrific conference. This was the first of the many conferences I’ll be attending this year and I’ll have more on EFI Connect next week.

Next month I’ll be in Los Angeles for the Konica Minolta Dealer meeting and in March I’m off to Ft. Lauderdale for my first ITEX Show.  I expect to be doing additional traveling in April and May as well as October and dates in between as I continue to receive those “Hold the Dates” e-mails.

I give those who travel more frequently than I do a lot of credit. I don’t know how you do it. For many of us in the document imaging industry travel is inevitable. For some it’s easy to get things done while on the road thanks to technology. For others it’s more of a challenge, whether one has the technology or not.

As someone responsible for generating a massive amount of content throughout the year for both the monthly print and weekly digital editions of ENX and ENX/The Week in Imaging, my challenge is finding a happy medium between what I can accomplish on the road and what’s best done in the privacy of my home office. To be honest, conducting hundreds of interviews a year and then transcribing them is a time-consuming process and a task much easier to do in my home office. I realize I’m not writing the Great American Novel here, but it’s still in everybody’s best interests—readers and mine—to make sure whatever I’m writing is interesting, accurate, and readable.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy these industry events, admittedly, some more than others. The travel part, driving to the airport, waiting, flying, etc., I can do without. But being there is another thing. As much as I enjoy working alone from home, there’s still nothing like being around people and as corny as pandering as it may sound I can’t think of a better group of people to be around than my associates in the document imaging industry.  Feel free to tell me to get a life.

Anyway, if you see me in my travels, be sure and say “Hello.”

Thanks for reading.
