Burns & Levinson Simplifies Patent and Court Filing Preparation with Nuance Power PDF

Burlington, MA (February 22, 2017) – Nuance Communications, Inc. today announced Burns & Levinson, a Boston-based, full service law firm with more than 125 attorneys in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island, has deployed Nuance Power PDF software. Power PDF delivered a fast return on investment from the time saved by simplifying patent and court filings, and easing document collaboration with clients.

Electronic filing with the courts and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has drastically changed the way law firms manage paperwork. At Burns & Levinson, the IT department was tasked with handling PDF conversion to support the firm’s thriving intellectual property and litigation practices, taking time away for IT troubleshooting and strategic initiatives. However, the amount of PDF conversions grew to be more than the IT team could handle, particularly after business work hours and on weekends.

To address this situation, Henry Chace, CIO at Burns & Levinson, tapped his connections in the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) and International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) to identify a solution. His peers had been talking about how easy it is to convert PDFs with Power PDF so he researched the software. “When I saw Power PDF, it did everything we needed. As for price, it was at a price point we could afford,” said Chace.

Now, all Burns & Levinson employees have Power PDF on their desktops and use the software multiple times per day. The software enabled the firm move away from a cumbersome document conversion process that had too many steps and took time away from client work. Power PDF made it simple for attorneys and assistants to convert PDF files to Microsoft Word, and vice versa. Multiple PDFs can undergo OCR for easy search and retrieval. When PDF charts with numbers are received, they are neatly converted without manual rekeying.

Power PDF has simplified the process of preparing documents to support court and USPTO filings. The software has facilitated quick turnarounds of converting documents to PDFs and sending them to clients at a cost that was considerably less than other available solutions.

“Time is money in a law firm. Nuance Power PDF has paid for itself in time savings because the software is so convenient and heavily used across the firm,” said Chace.

Power PDF is so well-received across the firm that only one feature could make Power PDF better, according to Chace. “If the software did the dishes, it would be great,” he joked.
