PaperStream Server: Efficiency and Flexibility from Fujitsu

On March 7, Fujitsu announced the release of PaperStream Server, a web-based, enterprise-class document processing platform that enables organizations to collect, process, index and route business critical content to Line-of-Business (LOB) or Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems.

Marni Carmichael, Senior Director, Product Management, Fujitsu says that PaperStream Server is as easy to implement and configure as it is to manage and use. She cites as key features its web-based platform, scalability and extensibility. She also noted the deep ECM integration, the ability to import from multiple sources and its adaptive processes.

“Because it is web-based and there are no end user-based licenses, you can easily add additional users [and] you can easily add additional input sources and index stations,” says Carmichael.

The adaptable processes include a visual workflow process designer that allows users to drag-and-drop required steps into the capture process.  Carmichael says that organizations can use this feature to write in their own custom steps.

Other features include a flexible capture and server-based image processing that utilizes PaperStream IP to enhance and clean up images for improved data extraction and indexing accuracy.

“Image processing is one of our flagship capabilities and we have included our image processing engine in PaperStream Server,” says Carmichael.

The solution also auto rotates pages, eliminates background noise, removes hole punch marks, and cleans up color. The document separation feature uses fixed page, barcode and patch codes to recognize and separate documents.

PaperStream Server validates data using pattern matching, required fields, read-only fields, database lookup and default values. It releases images as TIFF, PDF or searchable PDF files and it releases data in XML.  Everything is released to a folder or network folder, and Carmichael says it easily configures for connection to any LOB or ECM system.

Carmichael relates several key benefits of PaperStream Server: She says that since it is web-based, there is not a lot of deployment or user support required. There is no desktop or desk client component that has to be installed, and because it’s on a centralized server, it can be streamlined for management. It is also fully customizable.

Carmichael also notes that PaperStream Server can be customizable down to the device level and has been integrated with Sharp MFP devices. Along with Sharp, she says they hope to go to market with Konica Minolta and Ricoh as partners.

According to Carmichael, PaperStream Server is the cornerstone for a high-quality, efficient and flexible capture solution.

“Through an easy-to-use interface, PaperStream Server accelerates responsiveness while reducing the cost of document management,” she says. “As business processes evolve, PaperStream Server is scalable and adaptable to meet future business needs.”
