CANON U.S.A. AND NUANCE DEMONSTRATE CONFORMANCE TO
LATEST HEALTHCARE INTEROPERABILITY STANDARDS AT IHE
NORTH AMERICAN CONNECTATHON 2012
eCopy ShareScan Enables HL7 Clinical Document
Architecture (CDA) Based Exchange Between Canon
imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs and Leading Electronic
Health Record (EHR)Systems
BURLINGTON, Mass. and LAKE SUCCESS, NY, January 17,
2012 –
Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions,
and Nuance Communications, Inc., a leading provider
of speech and imaging solutions, today announced
that the companies have completed successful
interoperability testing of Nuance eCopy ShareScan
v5 software for converting and passing scanned
documents from Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs (along
with Canon imageRUNNER Multifunction Embedded
Application Platform (MEAP)-enabled MFPs) into
electronic health record (EHR) applications. The
Canon/Nuance initiative advances the healthcare
industry goal to create a complete patient health
story by enriching EHRs through the inclusion of
paper-based, clinical document information, and
facilitating the seamless exchange of healthcare
information.
Canon and Nuance successfully completed the testing
of the Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing and Cross
Enterprise Sharing of Scanned Documents profiles at
the recent IHE North America Connectathon. With over
150 systems and more than 500 participants, the IHE
North American Connectathon is the leading forum to
demonstrate systems interoperability for the health
information technology market. eCopy ShareScan v5,
running on a Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFP,
successfully executed scan workflows to generate
Health Level Seven International (HL7) Clinical
Document Architecture (CDA) messages that enable the
standardized passing of patient records to content
consumers -- such as an electronic health record
systems -- that are accessible online throughout the
patient care continuum.
Of the 1.2 billion clinical documents produced in
the United States each year, approximately 60
percent contain valuable information trapped in
unstructured documents, such as clinical notes, that
are unavailable for clinical use, quality
measurement and data mining. To address this issue,
the Health Story Project was founded by a
collaborative of healthcare vendors, providers and
associations to develop and promote data standards
through HL7 that support the flow of information
between unstructured documents and electronic
medical records. Nuance and Canon U.S.A. are both
members of the Health Story Project.
“Delivering successful interoperability of eCopy
ShareScan, Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs, and
leading EHR applications, moves us closer to
advancing healthcare information exchange to improve
patient care and create efficiencies that will help
drive down healthcare costs,” said Robert Weideman,
Senior Vice President and General Manager, Nuance
Document Imaging. “Nuance has deep healthcare
expertise and strong commitment to helping
healthcare organizations gain immediate and
continuous availability to vital clinical documents,
while also ensuring confidentiality and security.”
“For too many healthcare organizations, paper-based
content still restricts information flow in patient
care, and creates administrative inefficiencies and
excess costs,” said Sam Yoshida, vice president and
general manager, Canon U.S.A. “Canon has been
steadfast in supporting standards, such as HL7 CDA,
because they help healthcare organizations extend
interoperability across all aspects of patient care
to eliminate error-prone manual processes and
increase information accessibility.”
eCopy ShareScan is one of the world’s best-selling
document scanning and workflow solutions for
networked multifunction printers (MFPs). The
software provides healthcare organizations with
everything needed to automate their paper-to-digital
workflows, letting healthcare professionals scan
paper documents easily and securely using existing
investments in network MFPs and scanners. eCopy
ShareScan is the leader in connecting MFPs to
back-end applications through eCopy Connectors, with
over 100 connectors available from Nuance and its
partners.
