Tech Tips for May 2008

Subject: Toshiba E-120
Question: When the toner runs out and I’m installing a new one, the unit will click steadily until I pull the toner and drum, go through the motions, and put it all back together, and it’s fine until the next time it asks for toner. Any clues of what the clicking sound is and why it is occurring? Many thanks.

Answer: Check the toner drive gear and the dev unit. If the customer runs it down, the dev unit may be too low to set up.

Answer: I would guess that the noise is from the toner motor feeding toner into the dev, but if it happens AFTER it is full, that's odd.

Answer: Is the toner collector on the old cartridge full? The toner can back up in the drum unit and jam the auger. Opening the door will cause it to cycle and it will clear it.

Subject: SAVIN 4045esp/ cant use preset stamps
Question: I just sold this machine to my customer, and they use the preset stamps on their machine a lot. However when I took this one out, it won’t give that option. It’s there but you can’t use it. Does anyone know how I can get this setting back up and running?

Answer: You need to download the stamp data from the Ricoh site and upload it to your copier via a PCMCIA card.

Answer: Try reloading the "Stamp Data" using SP-5853

Question: Thanks for your help!

Subject: Sharp 8570
Question: The machine is dead. It has 115 volts to power board in the back of the machine, but that’s it. The on/off switch measures good. Are there any schematics for this machine? (The bridge rectifier meters out ok, and all fuses read good.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer: Wow that's an oldie. I’m sure I have the manual and will check to see if it has schematics. Did you look thru tips? It seems like old Sharps were in tips a lot. I will repost if I find the schematics. Are there any panel lights?

Answer: Skip the technical stuff; it is probably the power supply board. I doubt if a schematic will help as much as finding that board, but if you really want to be thorough, check in and out but that doesn’t really tell you much because a lost 5 volt signal elsewhere in the machine can disable the main power. I'm doing too much talking and too much thinking. I'll bet a dollar it's the power board. Good luck.

Answer: it may be worth re-soldering the board. It's pretty old and that is what happens when they get old.
