Comparing the modules of the C35 to the new additions to the family

By Britt Horvat - August 2008

New versions of the C35 style continue to roll off of the line and at the same time, the earlier releases such as the C35's and DocumentCentre 535/545/555's are becoming increasingly common for independent technicians to stumble on in the field.  The "Customer Replaceable Units" (CRU's) of these machines remain the best opportunities for making money and serving the customers who own these machines.  Repair the fusers, and reset the Xerographic Modules (drum cartridges) and you've got a large percentage of the calls covered.

With the newcomers come subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) differences in the machines and in the modules.  It's important to be aware of the differences so that you don't fall into any assumption pitfalls.  In this article we'll concentrate on the modules… the Xerographic Module (drum cartridge), the Fuser Module and then other known differences.  Afterwards we'll take a look at some solutions for the all-too-common Scanner Failure (14-110 code) on the 35 ppm machines.

Photo #1: Comparing Drum Cartridge Versions

There are two physically different versions where the Xerographic Modules are concerned. We'll call them the "C35 version" and the "WC 245 version".  The earlier models and also the newer models up to a speed of 55 ppm use the "C35 version" of the cartridge.  There are two types in this version: Type 'A' (113R610 for machines on the "Sold" plan which means they are not under a service contract), and Type 'B'  (113R608 for machines under the 'Metered' plan which is designed for machines under a service contract).  Models which use the "C35 version" include: (DocumentCentre) DC535, DC545, DC555, CopyCentre C35/C45/C55, (WorkCentre) WC 232/238, M232/M238, Pro232/Pro238, WC M35/M45/M55, Pro35/Pro45/Pro55, and WC 5030/5050/5632/5638.  Then there is the "WC 245 version".  This version is for faster models in the group of newer releases.  The cartridge part numbers are 113R674 (for Type 'A') and 113R672 (for Type 'B').  The models which use the "WC 245 version" include (CopyCentre) C165/C175/C245/C255/C265/C275, (WorkCentre) WC 165/175/245/255/265/275, M165/175, Pro165/175/245/255/265/275, and WC 5645/5655/5665/5675/5687.
